Complaints
Our
department prides it self in our employees, in the professional
manner in which our officers are
trained to respond to calls for service. Occasionally, there
will be times when a citizen feels that they have been mis-treated
by the Police Department. We consider these complaints, a
way for the Shelbyville Police to monitor the actions of our
employees. We have installed, in car video cameras, in most
all of our police units. These cameras help protect the
citizen as well as officer against any false allegations.
Also, we monitor telephone calls coming into the Shelbyville
Police Department on various lines, also to insure that all calls
are handled in a professional manner.
If you do have a complaint
against any employee of the Shelbyville Police Department, you
will need to come into the department and speak with the
supervisor on duty. They will be proud to provide you with a
Citizen Complaint Form. This form must be filled out
completely, and concisely naming all parties involved and those
that have witnessed the complaint actions. Once this form is
returned to the department, it will be forwarded to a supervisor
for investigation. Following an
investigation, a decision will be made whether the claim is
justified, un-founded, or
inconclusive, and you will be notified by mail of the results.
If you have disability which prevents you from
completing the form, any supervisor will assist you in completing
a complaint against a police officer. You will be asked to
identify yourself and then to give specific details about your
complaint.
Citizens should be aware that persons filing false
complaints against Shelbyville Police Department employees may be
prosecuted under the authority of TCA Code 39-16-502 .
Officers may also pursue a civil recourse against persons who file
a complaint against them under false pretenses.
